Early Dismissal From Classrooms -- Tuesday, Nov. 24 -- EC 11:30, ES/MS 11:45
Elementary School Parents Council

Here are the minutes of meeting held Thursday, October 15, 2009.

Mrs. Astley welcomed the group and read an inspiration: “A Thousand Years of Wisdom on Children.”
Welcome to Mrs. O’Keefe, the faculty liaison.

Morries Walker, Director of Explorers: This is the 4th week of the Enrichment program and it is going well. Please remember that there is no Explorers on Conference Days, Oct. 21 and Oct. 22. Summer camp dates are locked in for the weeks of July 5, 19 and 26 and they are focusing on trying to bring more programs for Elementary and Middle School children. Mr. Walker is particularly looking to revamp the Drama Camp, which was great last year, so that it is more accommodating to all grade level children. He is also trying to look into more Explorer Enrichment programs for the upper Elementary and Middle School students. Mrs. Astley thanked Mr. Walker for his work in meeting the needs of the families of the school.

School Happenings:  Grade 5 is having fun studying cells in science with the Candy/Cake “Cell” Creation project taking place today. In Language Arts, they just completed their paperback book reports and are looking forward to the next book, a fantasy. Overall, the students are doing well. Today, Grade 3 is on a field trip to the Tennessee Aquarium. This trip begins their “out of town” field trip experiences in Elementary School. The Tennessee Aquarium also exposes them to the study of the river system extending from Tennessee through Georgia/Florida into the ocean.

In November, Grade 4 will travel to Westville, Ga and grades 3-5 will enjoy a trip to the Atlanta Symphony. On October 23, Grade 1 will go to the Atlanta Ballet production of “Pinocchio” at the Cobb Energy Center and on October 26, they will visit the Roswell United Methodist Church to hear about their organ. Spirit Day is Friday, October 23. Check the Weekly Warrior for clothing guidelines for this day. A Freedom from Chemical Dependency rep will visit during the week of October 26, working in classes with students in grades 6-8. At Chapel that morning, we will welcome a guest, Father Heischman, head of NAES.

There is a parent meeting, open to parents in all grades, on Tuesday, October 27 at 6:45 p.m. Also, during the day on Tuesday, October 27, Lola Schaefer, a local author, will visit and work with students through the library. The Grade 5 Parents Luncheon is Thursday, October 29, to present information to the parents on the Middle School.

Dr. Michael Thompson will visit, sponsored by the PTO, on Tuesday, November 17, spending the day working with faculty, having lunch with the PTO leadership, then presenting to the parents and other local school communities in the evening. Watch the Weekly Warrior for details. Dr. Thompson is an internationally known psychologist/speaker and author of the books “The Pressured Child,” “Raising Cain” and many others.

Miscellaneous:
~A change to the co-curricular class scheduling came two years ago in an effort to accommodate all of the co-curricular programs and allow for more classroom teaching time. As a result, some co-curricular classes meet on a 9-week rotation basis during the semester.
~Please remember that there is no parking on Lanier Drive or Windsor Parkway to walk in to pick up students at the end of a school day. This is per the school’s neighborhood agreement. You are asked to please proceed through carpool.
~Field trip dates for grade levels can be found on the school website calendar. No specific information (i.e., destination, departure/return time) is included for the safety of the students. If you see a field trip listed that you would like more information on, please check with the teacher for specifics.

If you desire further details about any of the above topics feel free to contact Mrs. Sue Astley, Assistant Head of School/Elementary Principal.

The next meeting will be held Thursday, Nov.19, 2009 at 8:25 a.m. in the Alumni Room.
