St. Martin’s wishes all of our school families a very Happy Thanksgiving! Students will dismiss at 11:30 (EC) and 11:45 (ES & MS) from classrooms on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Explorers will not be open in the afternoon.
 
EC GRANDPARENTS DAY
St. Martin’s welcomes Early Childhood Grandparents and Grand-friends to school on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Check-in begins at 9:15 am. Guests will enjoy a breakfast buffet and the program will start at 10 am and end at approximately 11 a.m. Students will be dismissed back to their classrooms, where they can be picked up by grandparents or parents.
 
CONGRATULATIONS! We celebrate 2 students this week! The student of the week for last week – the week of November 9 -- is Olivia Leviton! The Student of the week for this week is William Boor! Congratulations Students!
 
FINANCIAL AID FORMS AVAILABLE

FIRE LANE PARKING
Reminder to all parents—parking is NOT permitted in the fire lane at any time. Even if a parent is coming in for just a moment or to pick up from Explorers, you MUST use a parking space. Emergencies can happen at any time and the fire lanes must always be clear for emergency vehicles. Thank you for your cooperation.

EARLY CHILDHOOD NEWS
Pre-K Celebrates a Family Harvest!
St. Martin’s Pre-K students will celebrate fall and families with a Family Harvest of songs Friday, Nov. 20 at 11:00 in Gable Hall.  Students will perform several songs about the farm, their families and Thanksgiving. They will also show off their skills with instruments, puppets and movement skills.  Mark your calendars and don’t miss it!  For more information, you can contact your child’s teacher or music teacher, Mimi Deupree at mdeupree@stmartinschool.org
 
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS
The annual Thanksgiving Food Drive begins this month: the First Grade will be collecting food to stock the Oglethorpe Food Pantry. Flyers will be going home in your child’s bag, which will list items needed for the pantry, however all non-perishable foods are welcome. We are once again going green; we ask each family to provide their own bag, either paper or plastic. The food drive will be ongoing through November 20. Look for collectors in carpool line!
 
DRAMA NEWS
Please join us for the 4th Annual World Storytelling Celebration on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at SMES from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. 50TH ANNIVERSARY FACTOID:
The events of September 11, 2001, inspired the SMES community to collect money for the firefighter’s fund. SMES held a Red, White and Blue Day at school. On this day, we proudly wore our nation’s colors and raised more than $12,000 to give to the firefighters 9-11 Fund for families of the lost firefighters.
 
GEORGIA EDUCATION TAX CREDIT

MULTICULTURAL OPPORTUNITY
In honor of the 61st Anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights, The National Center for Civil and Human Rights presents an evening with internationally renowned Author, Presenter, Researcher, Educator Dr. Joy DeGruy. She will sharing a special presentation on “Understanding Who We Are Culturally to Begin to Understand How We Connect Globally.” Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 7:00p.m. at Spelman College – Camille Olivia Cosby Auditorium.

EXPLORERS SCORES 100!!
St. Martin’s is delighted to announce that the Explorers Extended-Day Program has again received a score of 100% from the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR). In a surprise inspection from DHR on Nov. 5, the site coordinator spoke very highly about the Explorers Program and was pleased with the effectiveness of the staff. With all items in order, Explorers received a perfect score from the state. Congratulations to Director Morries Walker, Assistant Director Maria Canty and all of the Explorers staff!

SMES Fall Book Fair
The Fall Book Fair is right around the corner! Come stock up on Christmas gifts for family, friends and teachers. Teacher wish lists and gift certificates will be available.There will be a special opening for grandparents on Grandparents' Day.  Come out and support St. Martin's at this fun event!

FREE TUITION RAFFLE TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW! Back by popular demand, The Fling 2010 will hold a Raffle for Free Tuition the night of The Fling. Tickets are $200 each. A minimum of 100 must be sold in order to hold the raffle.  To increase the chances of winning, a maximum of 200 tickets will be sold.  If you would like to purchase a raffle ticket, please email FLING2010@comcast.net. Grief and the Holidays - Dec. 2 and 9 at 10:45 a.m.
Grief is never easy and it can be especially difficult during the holidays. If someone close to you has died and you would like some support to get through the holidays, please consider the following offering. Mother Erickson will host a two week class: December 2, and December 9 for those interested. It will be held at 10:45 AM on these Wednesday mornings in the Burgreen Room (Library). For more information and to RSVP, please contact Mother Mary Erickson at 404-228-0790 or email at merickson@stmartins.org. We also invite you to come to our St. Nicholas Service on Dec. 7.
 
Advent Festival with Candlelight Lessons & Carols Service
Sunday, Nov. 29, 4-6:30 P.M. in Gable Hall
Nov. 29 is the beginning of Advent, a season where we are called as Christians to slow down and prepare our hearts and minds. The party begins at 4 p.m.
  • Cider, hot chocolate and donuts provided by J2A.
  • Advent candles and wreaths to make here or kits to take home.
  • Complimentary Advent calendars and devotionals.
  • The Cathedral Bookstore will be here to make your Christmas shopping even easier.
  • Children’s story time and Advent lesson in the Music and Movement Room at 4:30.
  •  (NEW!) St. Margaret’s Guild will hold a bake sale.
  •  (NEW!) Deck the Halls will be selling Christmas decoration and ribbons for your Advent Wreaths.
  •   Advent Lessons and Carols service at 5:30, complete with candles and singing (no sermon, just readings and beautiful music). 
  •   (NEW!) There will be a pause during the service for families with young children who wish to leave prior to The Holy Eucharist.  This change and others have been made to make this a more kid friendly family worship.
